Denver Botanic Gardens

I have a new macro lens! And what better place to test it then the Denver botanic gardens? Even in winter there are many beautiful flowers and plants to see and photograph. On the day I was there they had signs up about an orchid photography contest. I did gets some pictures of the many different kinds of orchids they had in the tropical conservatory however this picture of a small bunch of red pea size petals was my favorite of the day. The size of the tiny flowers tested my new lens and the water nesting in each center gave the flowers and the picture more life.  I've been told to use a tripod with a macro lens and that adding external flash helps as well however I hand held the whole day, using the ambient light coming through the dome while in the conservatory and natural light outside, standing in shade to soften the midday sun whenever possible. I did see a man taking pictures of the orchids using a tripod and light, it looked cumbersome but interesting. I think he has good chance in winning the contest. They haven't posted winners yet.

I can't wait to go back in the spring.
